EU trade barriers cripple Ukrainian exports as Russia intensifies war

The European Union has re‑introduced trade barriers on key Ukrainian sectors, including new steel tariffs and restrictions on agricultural products. Eurostat data show Ukrainian imports to the EU fell 12% – about €3 billion – marking the lowest level since 2023, while EU exports to Ukraine rose to a record €24 billion.

Critics say the measures weaken Ukraine’s economy at a time when Russia is stepping up its war effort. The EU’s actions come alongside import bans imposed by Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, further limiting Ukraine’s ability to finance its defence and rebuild war‑damaged regions.
