EU to ban PFAS-coated Airfryers from Oct 2026

The European Union will adopt a regulation that takes effect on 10 October 2026, prohibiting the use of certain per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in consumer products, including the non‑stick coatings of many Airfryer models. PFAS are persistent chemicals linked to environmental contamination and health risks, and the EU already banned the well‑known PFAS compound PFOA in 2020. The new rule targets short‑chain PFAS still used in kitchen appliances.

Millions of Airfryers are in use across Europe. German authorities note that while a total ban is not planned, there is a clear need for action, and the European Chemicals Agency is evaluating further restrictions. Some manufacturers have begun offering PFAS‑free, ceramic‑based alternatives, which tests show perform comparably. Consumers are advised to verify whether a model contains PFAS‑based coatings before purchasing.
