EU to Ban Unverified ‘Eco‑Friendly’ and ‘Sustainable’ Labels from 2026

The European Union will prohibit vague environmental claims such as “eco‑friendly,” “green,” “sustainable,” and “carbon‑neutral” unless companies can provide verifiable evidence of the performance behind the terms. The “Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition” directive, which entered into force in March 2024, requires all 27 member states to incorporate the rule into national law by March 27 2026 and to enforce it continent‑wide starting September 27 2026. The regulation also bans self‑created labels and places legal responsibility for displayed claims on retailers rather than manufacturers.

The new labeling rules are intended to increase transparency for shoppers and to pressure businesses across sectors—including tourism operators in Africa—to substantiate sustainability marketing. Industry observers note that while the measure tightens environmental messaging, it also highlights the broader need for sustainable tourism to address social and economic pillars alongside ecological impact.
