EU to enforce verified employer branding seals from September 2026

A new EU directive, often referred to as the Green Claims Directive, will require all employer branding seals to be based on independent, transparent certification systems. The rule, to be transposed into national law by 27 September 2026, targets “fantasy” seals that companies create or purchase without objective verification. Under the German Unfair Competition Act, using unverified sustainability or quality seals will be classified as illegal advertising, exposing firms to significant fines and reputational damage.

Companies must therefore review any badges that claim "top work climate," "family‑friendly" or similar qualities and ensure that the criteria, methodology and awarding body are fully documented and independent. The deadline applies across the EU, but Germany is highlighted as the primary implementing jurisdiction. Failure to comply after the September 2026 cut‑off could result in penalties and loss of trust among job seekers in the ongoing "war for talent."
