EU to Review MiCA Crypto Rules as Projects Shift to Canada
The European Union has announced a consultation to revise the Markets in Crypto‑Assets (MiCA) framework. Officials say the review will address the exclusion of foreign stablecoins such as Tether and may broaden the regime to cover emerging tokenised payment and deposit services. The move is influenced by developments in the United States, including the GENIUS Act and recent pro‑stablecoin policies.
At the same time, crypto startups are increasingly choosing Canada over the EU to launch operations. Analysts note that MiCA’s capital requirements (€50,000‑€150,000) and compliance costs (up to €80,000) create a financial barrier for early‑stage firms. By relocating to Canada, companies can avoid these expenses while still accessing a regulated market.
The combined pressure of regulatory costs in Europe and the EU’s pending rule changes is reshaping where crypto projects establish their headquarters and how stablecoins will be licensed across the Eurozone.
