EU to tighten PFAS rules for air fryers

The European Union will keep air fryers on the market but introduce new regulations aimed at improving safety and environmental impact. Manufacturers will be required to gradually limit the use of per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in non‑stick coatings and develop alternative materials. The first phase of the restrictions is set to start in October 2026. The measures target the persistent chemicals that have been detected in water, soil and living organisms, prompting EU action to protect public health and the environment. While the rules could raise production costs for manufacturers, it is unclear whether they will be passed on to consumers.

These changes represent a technical challenge for the appliance industry, which must adapt its coating technologies to comply with the new standards.
