EU launches €1.5bn financing programme for battery cell factories
The European Commission has created the Battery Booster Facility, a scheme that can provide up to €1.5 billion in interest‑free loans to manufacturers of battery cells for electric vehicles. Loans may reach €500 million per project and can cover as much as 60 % of eligible costs. To qualify, a project must be located in the European Economic Area, be moving from pilot to full commercial scale, and plan an annual production capacity of at least 10 GWh. The call for applications opened on 28 July, with a deadline of 30 September 2026. The programme is intended to cut the EU’s reliance on Asian battery imports and to strengthen the European automotive industry.
The initiative is part of the EU’s broader effort to boost green technology manufacturing and secure supply chains for the transition to electric mobility.
