EU urged to safeguard Croat minority in Bosnia and Herzegovina, says MEP Željana Zovkо

European Parliament member Željana Zovkо, who sits on the AFET committee, warned on 5 June that Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina are facing an “alarming position”. She said the community is becoming increasingly small and is entering a new electoral cycle without the required electoral and constitutional reforms and without full implementation of Constitutional Court rulings. Zovkо called on the European Union to give a clear answer on Bosnia’s future institutional arrangement and to support a gradual transfer of responsibilities to domestic institutions. She urged a stronger EU role in the country’s accession process and stressed that equality of the three constituent peoples – Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats – is essential for a stable, functional and European‑oriented Bosnia and Herzegovina. She also referenced a long‑standing proposal for a federal model similar to Belgium as a possible solution to the political deadlock.
