EU urges Serbia to conduct transparent probe into alleged sound‑cannon use during March protest

The European Commission has asked Serbia to carry out a transparent and credible investigation into allegations that a sound‑cannon was used against demonstrators during the March 15 protest in Belgrade. EU spokesperson Giom Mers emphasized that the inquiry must comply with the law and respect fundamental rights, including freedom of assembly and expression.

Mers referenced the European Court of Human Rights decision of April 2025, which ordered Serbia to adopt temporary measures to prevent any future use of acoustic devices for crowd control and to ensure that individuals discussing the alleged use are not subject to criminal prosecution. The case follows a criminal proceeding launched by the government of Aleksandar Vučić over claims of a simulated sound‑cannon deployment based on disputed evidence, prompting a series of witness hearings.
