EU's Kaja Kallas urges Turkey to respect member states' sovereign rights
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas responded to a question from PASOK leader Giannis Maniatis about Turkey’s proposed “Blue Homeland” maritime legislation. She said the European Commission is closely monitoring information on the draft law and stressed that Turkey must refrain from unilateral actions that breach international law and the sovereign rights of EU member states.
Kallas added that Turkey is expected to demonstrate unwavering commitment to good‑neighbourly relations, to honour international agreements and to pursue peaceful settlement of disputes. The Commission noted it has not taken a definitive position on the draft law, but it is watching related media reports and statements. She also clarified that the Center for Regional Activity for Climate Change (CC/RAC), cited as having participated in the draft’s preparation, is fully funded by Turkish contributions and was not created in cooperation with the EU. The EU reiterated its focus on defending the interests of its members and maintaining regional stability, invoking the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
