OECD Reports AI Reshapes Jobs Without Mass Layoffs

The Organisation for Economic Co‑operation and Development (OECD) found that artificial intelligence is remodelling work rather than eliminating jobs, with unemployment in the OECD area at 4.9 % – near historic lows – and employment expected to grow 0.3 % this year and 0.6 % next year. The agency says AI changes the skills demanded by employers but has not triggered a broad reduction in labour demand.

Economic analyses show that AI mainly automates individual tasks, not whole occupations, boosting productivity and often creating new roles. Historical waves of automation – from ATMs to autopilot – have similarly reshaped work without large‑scale job loss.

In Latin America, AI is accelerating a shift in the labour market, automating repetitive, data‑intensive tasks while raising demand for critical‑thinking, creativity and strategic decision‑making. Experts stress the need for up‑skilling and for workers to learn how to use AI tools effectively.

A Mexican AI‑native startup report highlighted that such firms now generate over US$400 000 of revenue per employee, growing 156 % annually, positioning Mexico as a leading hub for high‑efficiency AI enterprises in the region.

Interviews with specialists in Chile and elsewhere echo the view that AI will not replace careers but will transform how work is performed. Professionals are urged to adopt AI‑assisted workflows, experiment with prompting tools, and focus on tasks that add uniquely human value.
