Eugen Kvaternik: The life and death of a Croatian revolutionary

Eugen Kvaternik, a prominent Croatian politician, diplomat, and revolutionary, was killed 155 years ago in Rakovica following a failed armed uprising against Austro-Hungarian rule.

Kvaternik was a key figure in the Party of Rights, working alongside Ante Starčević to advocate for a unified and independent Croatian state. His political career was marked by frequent exile due to his opposition to the Monarchy and his resistance to Hungarian influence following the Croatian-Hungarian Settlement of 1868, which he believed stripped Croatia of its autonomy.

In October 1871, disillusioned by failed diplomatic efforts, Kvaternik launched the Rakovica rebellion. He established a provisional national Croatian government with figures including Petar Vrdoljak, Anto Rakijaš, and Vjekoslav Bach. However, the uprising was unsuccessful, and most of the movement's leaders, including Kvaternik, were killed.
