Eugen Tomac warns early elections in Romania would benefit Putin

Presidential advisor Eugen Tomac has warned that holding early elections in Romania at this time would be a “gift to Putin.” Speaking on Digi24, Tomac argued that early elections would not resolve the current political crisis but would instead deepen and prolong it.

Tomac expressed concern that such elections could be won by political forces that aggressively promote Russian narratives, potentially leaving the country unstable and vulnerable. He noted that current polls suggest a new scrutiny might fail to produce a parliamentary majority, further exacerbating instability near Romania's borders.

The advisor emphasized the need for a pragmatic political solution to overcome the current deadlock, stressing the importance of maintaining a firm pro-Western direction, strengthening the partnership with the United States, and ensuring loyalty to the European Union. This comes amid a period of political instability, following the failure of the government proposed by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan.
