Eugene to host 2028 U.S. Olympic track and field trials

The 2028 U.S. Olympic track and field trials will be held in Eugene, Oregon, at Hayward Field from June 17-22, 2028. This decision bypasses Los Angeles, which is scheduled to host the 2028 Summer Games.

The trials will follow a compressed six-day schedule, a departure from previous formats that typically spanned two weekends. To accommodate this timeframe and allow for athlete recovery, selections for the decathlon, heptathlon, and 10,000 meters will be held earlier in the spring at locations yet to be determined.

USA Track and Field CEO Max Siegel defended the choice, citing Eugene’s successful history of selecting top athletes. Since Eugene began hosting trials in 2008, U.S. athletes have secured 52 gold medals in athletics. While some athletes have raised concerns regarding travel and lodging costs in a smaller metro area, the decision avoids the logistical challenges of hosting two major events in Los Angeles within a short period.
