Eugenio Zanetti, Oscar-winning Argentine artist, dies at 79

Eugenio Zanetti, the acclaimed Argentine artist and Oscar winner, has died in Buenos Aires at the age of 79. His death occurred suddenly on a Friday while he was working on rehearsals for the opera ‘Los cuentos de Hoffmann’ at the Teatro Colón.

Zanetti was a multifaceted creator whose career spanned six decades across painting, theater, opera, and cinema. He achieved international stardom in Hollywood, winning the Academy Award for Best Art Direction in 1996 for the film ‘Restoration’ and receiving a subsequent nomination for ‘What Dreams May Come’.

Born in Córdoba, Zanetti had recently returned to his hometown to inaugurate a retrospective exhibition titled ‘El hombre que habita muchos mundos’ at the Museo Tamburini. His legacy includes significant contributions to both Argentine and international stage and screen, recognized by institutions such as the Asociación Argentina de Actores and the National Secretary of Culture.
