Eugénio Fonseca honored at Setúbal Cathedral

Eugénio Fonseca, the former president of Cáritas Portuguesa, was honored during a wake at the Setúbal Cathedral. The ceremony brought together family, friends, Church representatives, and various Portuguese political and social figures.

Throughout his life, Fonseca was dedicated to social intervention and combating poverty. In a final gesture reflecting his lifelong commitment to the vulnerable, he requested that no flowers be purchased for his funeral, asking instead that the funds be used to provide food for the poor. However, despite this request, flowers were present during the funeral ceremonies.

Fonseca was also recognized for his efforts toward social unity, including a previous initiative to distribute Pope Francis’s encyclical, ‘Fratelli tutti’, to all Portuguese parliamentary groups through a diverse group of Catholics and Islamic community representatives.
