EUMAM MOZ changes command to bolster Mozambique military readiness

Brigadier General Sérgio Lino de Almeida Estrela of the Portuguese Air Force has assumed command of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in Mozambique (EUMAM MOZ). Succeeding Commodore César Pires Correia, Estrela leads a mission focused on developing the capabilities of the Mozambique Defense Armed Forces (FADM) to act with greater autonomy and sustainability.

The mission prioritizes supporting Rapid Reaction Forces (QRF) operating in the Cabo Delgado province, which has faced insurgent attacks since 2017. These attacks have resulted in over 6,600 deaths and the displacement of 1.2 million people.

During the command handover ceremony in Maputo, Lieutenant General Michiel van der Laan, Director of the EU Military Planning and Conduct Capability, emphasized that supporting Mozambique against insurgents is a common interest for both the European Union and Mozambique. The mission, which continues to be led by Portugal, aims to consolidate training results as its current mandate approaches its end at the conclusion of the year.
