Eunpyeong District bicycle infrastructure faces safety concerns

Eunpyeong District in Seoul faces significant challenges regarding its bicycle infrastructure despite having a total of 48.93km of bicycle paths across 35 routes. While the total length exceeds that of neighboring districts like Seodaemun and Mapo, the quality and safety of these paths are highly criticized.

Approximately 81.1% of the network consists of shared paths for both bicycles and pedestrians. A major portion of these, 45.25%, are non-separated shared paths that lack physical barriers like curbs or planters to distinguish between cyclists and walkers. Only 18.9% of the paths are actual dedicated bicycle lanes or paths physically separated from motor vehicle traffic.

Reports and local activists highlight structural flaws such as sudden disconnections in the path network and a lack of priority roads for cyclists. The district office has previously acknowledged that existing paths are narrow and that the high prevalence of shared pedestrian paths results in poor commuting rights for cyclists.
