Eurispes report highlights digital technology challenges in Italy
A report by Eurispes reveals a complex relationship between the Italian population and digital technologies, highlighting significant mental health concerns and a generational divide. Approximately 65.8% of Italians consider their relationship with digital tools to be problematic in some way. While smartphones have reached near-total penetration across all age groups—used by 94.3% of the population—other devices like computers and smartwatches show a sharp decline in usage among those over 64.
The study identifies several symptoms of 'technostress' and compulsive behavior. Over half of Italians check their phones immediately upon waking, a figure that rises to 86% among 18-24-year-olds. Additionally, 83.9% of respondents reported using their smartphones longer than intended, and 65.3% experience anxiety when their battery is low.
Generational disparities are also evident in digital literacy and security. While younger users struggle with excessive screen time, 67.3% of those over 64 rate their own digital skills negatively. Furthermore, while most feel safe communicating with friends and family, less than half of the population feels confident in their ability to recognize online scams.
