Euro 7 standards to regulate vehicle emissions and durability
The European Union is implementing the Euro 7 regulation, which introduces stricter environmental standards for the automotive industry. Unlike previous standards focused primarily on exhaust gases, Euro 7 expands oversight to include particulate matter from brake wear and tire abrasion, impacting both internal combustion and electric vehicles.
Key implementation dates include November 29, 2026, for new types of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, and November 29, 2027, for all new vehicles in those categories. Trucks and buses will be subject to the standards starting in 2028. Additionally, a specific battery passport requirement for electric vehicles will take effect on February 18, 2027.
The regulation also mandates increased durability for vehicle electronics, requiring sensors and control systems to function for up to 10 years or 200,000 kilometers. To improve transparency, an Environmental Vehicle Passport (EVP) will be introduced, providing a digital identity via QR code that contains data on emissions, energy consumption, and battery health for up to 20 years.
