Euro Gains Slightly as US‑Iran Tensions Ease and Oil Prices Fall
The euro rose modestly against the US dollar, trading between 1.138 and 1.140 dollars in early June. The European Central Bank set its reference rate at 1.1367‑1.1377 dollars, slightly below the market level. The currency’s lift was attributed to a pause in the United States’ attacks on Iran after 13 consecutive nights and to Iran’s own indication that it would suspend its strikes for the time being. President Donald Trump said the United States was in "very deep negotiations" with Iran.
Lower oil prices also supported the euro. Brent crude fell below $90 a barrel and U.S. WTI prices dropped sharply, reducing demand for the dollar as a safe‑haven commodity currency. At the same time, weaker US consumer‑confidence data – the Conference Board index fell to 90.8 in July – pressured the greenback. The euro also edged higher versus the Swiss franc, reaching about 0.931 francs.
These movements came ahead of the Federal Reserve’s interest‑rate decision, with markets watching for any signals on future US monetary policy.
