Euro NCAP updates safety tests to emphasize physical vehicle controls
Euro NCAP has updated its safety testing protocols to place greater emphasis on the usability of essential driving functions. The new methodology, set for implementation by 2026, evaluates how easily drivers can operate critical controls such as indicators, headlights, windscreen wipers, and the eCall emergency button.
The assessment aims to address concerns regarding driver distraction caused by the industry trend of moving physical buttons to touchscreen menus. While many modern vehicles achieve five-star safety ratings, the updated tests highlight significant differences in ergonomics between manufacturers.
Recent testing of models under the new protocols showed that the Audi Q7 performed exceptionally well, scoring 100 percent for the ease of use of basic functions. In contrast, the Chinese-made XPeng X9 struggled due to its heavy reliance on digital screens for essential tasks. Other manufacturers, such as Geely and Cupra, achieved scores around 80 percent in these categories.
