Euro-Office open‑source office suite launched in Europe
Euro-Office, billed as the first European open‑source office suite, released its first stable version, DocumentServer 9.3.1. The suite is a fork of ONLYOFFICE’s AGPL code and supports Microsoft Office file formats (DOCX, PPTX, XLSX) as well as OpenDocument formats. Backed by European companies such as IONOS, Nextcloud and OpenProject, it aims to lessen dependence on Russian and U.S. software amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
The application runs as a web service; users currently install it via Docker (e.g., docker pull ghcr.io/euro‑office/documentserver:latest). Desktop and mobile clients are planned for later release. The project has drawn criticism: The Document Foundation labelled it an opportunistic re‑brand and objected to the default use of Microsoft’s OOXML format over ODF, while ONLYOFFICE raised concerns about license compliance.
