Euro rises above 5.26 lei amid political and global economic shifts
The Euro has risen above the 5.26 lei threshold in Romania, reaching levels near historical highs seen in May. According to data from the National Bank of Romania, the exchange rate climbed to approximately 5.2644 lei per euro.
Several factors are contributing to this currency movement, including the prospect of interest rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve and rising yields on 10-year U.S. Treasury bonds. Locally, political instability and protests in Bucharest have increased demand for foreign currency from speculative funds. Additionally, conflict in the Middle East continues to exert pressure on energy markets, impacting industrial costs.
Regarding domestic monetary indicators, the three-month ROBOR index remained stable at 5.84%, while the yield on 10-year Romanian government bonds held steady at around 7.3%. Other currency updates show the U.S. dollar trading at approximately 4.58 lei and the British pound at roughly 6.13 lei.
