Eurobattery Minerals faces crisis amid CEO fraud conviction
Eurobattery Minerals is facing a major leadership and legal crisis that has resulted in the suspension of its shares on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. The company’s chairman, Jan-Olof Arnbom, has resigned with immediate effect, and its liquidity provider, Mangold Fondkommission AB, has terminated its role as mentor.
The crisis follows the disclosure that CEO Roberto García Martínez was convicted of fraud in Spain. The conviction, related to a 2011 mining investment in Sierra Leone, carries a two-year prison sentence and a $3.46 million liability for damages. While the prison sentence has been suspended for a five-year probationary period subject to financial conditions, García Martínez is also under investigation by the Swedish Economic Crime Authority for alleged serious insider trading.
This instability threatens the San Juan tungsten mine project in A Gudiña, Spain. The project, managed through Tungsten San Juan, was nearing operational status and was expected to create 35 direct jobs and approximately 100 indirect positions. While the company has not officially announced a halt to investments or mine operations, the project faces significant uncertainty.
