Eurogroup President urges fiscal reforms amid bond market volatility

Eurogroup President Kyriakos Pierrakakis has urged governments to implement fiscal consolidation and structural reforms in response to volatility in the bond markets. Speaking to Handelsblatt, the Greek Finance Minister noted that rising interest rates are increasing pressure on national budgets and emphasized that “solid finances are of existential importance.”

Pierrakakis called for rapid progress on both national and European levels, specifically highlighting the need for advancements in the Savings and Investment Union to better mobilize private capital. He argued that strengthening individual national growth potential, combined with European-wide reforms, provides a systematic response to interest rate pressures.

Despite market fluctuations, Pierrakakis maintained that the Eurozone’s fundamentals remain solid, noting that interest rates in the region are lower than in the US or UK and that risk spreads between Eurozone members remain limited. He also encouraged the German government to pursue its reform agenda, citing Greece’s recovery from an existential crisis as evidence that while reforms may be initially difficult, they yield long-term political and economic benefits.
