Euroleague Basketball introduces AI refereeing and EuroCup updates

Euroleague Basketball has announced significant structural changes for both the EuroLeague and the EuroCup. A primary update is the introduction of an automated system powered by artificial intelligence to select referee trios. This AI-driven system processes various criteria established by the officiating department, including referee hierarchy, scheduling, workload, and game-specific characteristics. The system applies 14 different rules categorized into three areas: sporting criteria, schedule and workload management, and integrity.

In addition to the technological shift in officiating, the organization is implementing 14 new rules affecting gameplay and schedule management.

Separately, the EuroCup is preparing for its new season starting September 29, which features an expanded format of 32 teams. The upcoming season follows a busy transfer period involving several high-profile players moving from the EuroLeague. Notable transfers include Cedi Osman to PAOK and Matt Morgan to Aris. Other significant moves include Shakil McKissic to Turk Telekom, Nikos Manion to Roma, and Lorenzo Brown to Hapoel Jerusalem.
