EuroLeague clubs reject NBA proposal for joint European competition

EuroLeague shareholder clubs have unanimously rejected a proposal from the NBA to form a joint European basketball competition. The rejection occurred during a meeting in Como, Italy, where the 13 founding clubs declined an offer reportedly valued at approximately 520 million euros to purchase their shares.

Clubs cited concerns over losing control and management of the competition, with some describing the NBA's terms as 'unacceptable' and 'colonialist'. The proposal also reportedly required EuroLeague to maintain its current structure and forgo its planned expansion.

Despite the rejection, the NBA and FIBA remain committed to launching 'NBA Europe' by 2027. This proposed league aims to feature 16 teams, including 12 permanent members and four slots determined through FIBA competitions. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver indicated that while the organizations hope to reach an agreement with EuroLeague, they will proceed with their own project if necessary.

Simultaneously, EuroLeague is pursuing its own growth strategy, including plans to expand from 20 to 24 teams for the 2027/28 season and converting current 10-year licenses into a franchise model. The competition for talent, sponsors, and broadcasting rights in Europe may soon involve two distinct, competing professional basketball systems.
