EuroLeague shareholders meet in Como to discuss franchise model and expansion
EuroLeague shareholders met in Como, Italy, to discuss strategic decisions regarding the future of the competition. A primary focus of the meeting was the transition toward a franchise model, including the proposal to convert existing ten-year licenses held by 13 member-clubs into permanent franchise positions.
Discussions also addressed the planned expansion of the league from 20 to 24 teams. While the expansion is a key strategic priority, a final decision regarding the specific four teams to be added has not yet been reached. Currently, 13 clubs have expressed interest in franchise licenses, including Hapoel Jerusalem and Aris, alongside other candidates such as Red Star, Dubai, London Lions, Napoli, PAOK, Paris, Partizan, Roma, Valencia, and Virtus Bologna.
EuroLeague President Dejan Bodiroga and CEO Chus Bueno highlighted the significant growth and momentum achieved by European club basketball in recent decades. The meeting also touched upon the potential for a new format starting in the 2027-2028 season to accommodate the increased number of teams.
