Europe adopts wood as a primary material for decarbonization

European forests are increasingly positioned as critical economic and climate infrastructure. According to the Forest Tracks 2025/2026 report by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, which analyzed sixteen countries, wood is becoming a primary material for decarbonization efforts across the continent.

The construction sector is a major driver of this shift. The use of cross-laminated timber, hybrid structures, and prefabricated components can effectively reduce the carbon footprint of construction sites while storing CO2 for decades. Public policies in several nations are already encouraging bio-based materials in collective housing and schools.

Beyond construction, the bioeconomy is expanding. Wood is being utilized as an alternative to petrochemicals in the production of paper pulp, packaging, textiles, insulation, and resins. Additionally, innovations such as those from the startup InventWood and researcher Dr. Liangbing Hu aim to enhance wood's structural properties, potentially revolutionizing the building sector.
