Europe advances automotive semiconductor security with RIGOLETTO project and certified PUF technology
European automotive hardware developers are strengthening next‑generation vehicle platforms through collaborative research. The RIGOLETTO project, backed by the Chips Joint Undertaking, gathered 64 semiconductor companies and research institutes from 15 European nations to design an open, RISC‑V‑based automotive computing platform. At the General Assembly held in Herzogenaurach, Germany on July 7‑8, Arteris representative Emmanuel Vaumorin highlighted progress on processor cores, AI accelerators, interconnects and software tools needed for software‑defined vehicles.
In parallel, the industry announced the first certification of an automotive‑grade Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) IP. The PUF leverages inherent manufacturing variations in silicon to generate unique cryptographic identities for each chip, eliminating the need to store permanent secret keys and improving resistance to invasive attacks. This milestone paves the way for more secure over‑the‑air updates, V2X communications and safety‑critical functions in modern vehicles.
