The ongoing US‑Iran conflict has heightened concerns over fossil‑fuel dependence, giving Europe a fresh impetus to accelerate electric‑vehicle (EV) adoption. By mid‑2026, Britain saw a 35 % rise in new battery‑electric vehicle registrations and a 30 % market share, while Europe as a whole recorded over one million BEV registrations in the first half of the year, driven by subsidies, falling prices and higher fuel costs.
Industry analysts argue that lasting progress requires more than vehicle sales; it depends on building a resilient, flexible energy ecosystem. Futurice’s chief growth officer David Mitchell stresses the need for smarter grids that can treat EVs as grid‑responsive assets, allowing households and fleets to shift demand and support the network.
In Australia, Schneider Electric’s channel and marketing manager Vignesh Srinivasan warns that expanding fast‑charging networks involves significant capital and operational investment. High‑speed chargers demand dedicated loads of one to two megavolt‑amps, yet most distribution transformers provide only 0.5‑1 MVA, necessitating upgrades to medium‑ or high‑voltage infrastructure and ongoing maintenance. Modular, grid‑integrated solutions are being trialled to address these challenges.
