Europe records highest summer flight volume despite Middle East conflict

European airspace reached record activity during the summer holiday period of July and August 2026. According to data from Eurocontrol, the continent averaged 35,959 flights per day, marking a 2.4% increase compared to 2025. A peak of 37,640 flights was recorded on Friday, July 10.

Despite the surge, flight punctuality improved, with 72.6% of flights arriving on time, up 1.2 percentage points from the previous year. However, France faced significant challenges, accounting for 32% of all delays due to air traffic control management issues. Greece also reported that record passenger volumes pushed its air traffic control systems to their limits.

The conflict between the United States and Iran influenced travel patterns, as many Europeans opted for destinations within the continent perceived as safer. This shift led to a “high increase” in traffic for countries such as Albania, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia. Conversely, traffic decreased in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Türkiye. Fourteen countries, including Italy, Spain, and Ireland, recorded their highest-ever daily traffic volumes this summer.
