Europe braces for winter gas, diesel shortages and climate‑driven security risks

Europe's gas storage is only just above 50% of capacity, far short of the 90% target, and disrupted Qatari LNG supplies and high prices could leave the bloc at about 75% of its desired reserves by November. At the same time, refined‑product markets are tight: Gulf deliveries are constrained, Russia has reduced diesel exports after attacks on its refineries, and European diesel inventories are at their lowest since 2022. The United States cannot increase exports because its own stocks are falling. analysts warn that a mild winter could be managed, but a harsh season may trigger a deepening energy crisis.

A separate but related concern is the growing impact of extreme heat on European security. Record‑breaking summer temperatures have already caused roughly 14,000 excess deaths in six western European states. NATO and the EU now label climate change a “threat multiplier,” noting that heat undermines military training, degrades air‑field surfaces, reduces aircraft lift, and strains critical infrastructure such as energy, water and food supply chains. These climate‑driven vulnerabilities are increasingly seen as central to Europe’s overall defence posture.
