Europe electric truck charging demand could exceed 200 TWh by 2045
A study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) and the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) projects a significant rise in electricity demand for electric trucks in Europe. Under a scenario with supportive political frameworks, annual charging demand could reach approximately 100 TWh by 2035 and exceed 200 TWh by 2045.
Germany is expected to have the highest demand, potentially reaching 43 TWh by 2045, followed by France and the United Kingdom. The research indicates that charging will not be evenly distributed but will concentrate around specific freight corridors, industrial hubs, and logistics centers. Most charging is expected to occur at depots rather than en route.
Experts warn that infrastructure development and grid planning must prioritize these high-demand areas to ensure the power grid can keep pace with the rapid transition to battery-electric heavy-duty vehicles.
