Europe electric truck charging demand to reach 200 TWh by 2045

A study by Fraunhofer ISI and the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) predicts a substantial increase in electricity demand for electric truck charging across Europe. Under favorable policy scenarios, annual demand is estimated to reach approximately 100 TWh by 2035 and rise to 200 TWh by 2045.

The demand is expected to concentrate in specific freight corridors, logistics hubs, and industrial areas. Major demand volumes are projected in key European freight markets, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy. The report highlights that depot-based charging will predominate, often accounting for over 70% to 80% of total energy consumption.

For businesses transitioning to electric fleets, successful electrification requires detailed planning beyond simply replacing diesel vehicles. Effective strategies involve analyzing daily mileage, routes, and idle times to optimize charging schedules and costs. The integration of telematics is recommended to monitor range, state of charge, and energy consumption, especially as Low Emission Zones become more prevalent in urban areas.
