Europe energy security: Solar power offsets rising fossil fuel costs

Europe is facing renewed energy market pressures due to geopolitical conflicts affecting fuel transport and refining. While Middle East crude oil exports recovered in late September, high freight costs, increased insurance, and refining difficulties continue to drive up fuel prices. To mitigate market uncertainty, G7 countries coordinated the release of 100 million barrels from emergency reserves.

In response to these challenges, solar energy has emerged as a critical stabilizer. According to SolarPower Europe, solar energy has saved the EU approximately 37.4 billion euros by reducing reliance on imported gas since the start of the war in Iran. In June, solar became the largest single source of electricity in the EU, providing 25% of the bloc's total production.

Individual nations have seen significant benefits from renewable transitions. Spain has doubled its wind and solar capacity since 2019, adding over 40 GW to its energy mix, which has reduced the impact of expensive fossil fuel generators on electricity prices by 75%. Meanwhile, local initiatives, such as solar installations in schools in Croatia's Varaždin County, are contributing to regional energy security and cost reductions.
