ITA Airways launches cabin service for large dogs

ITA Airways announced a new "Large Dog on Board" service that will start on 3 August. The policy permits dogs weighing between 10 kg and 30 kg to travel in the passenger cabin on selected domestic flights, with a maximum of two dogs per aircraft. The larger dog (15‑30 kg) is seated in the first row on the left side of the cabin on Airbus A220s, while the smaller dog (10‑15 kg) is placed in the rear row; similar arrangements apply to Airbus A319 and A320 types.

The service is limited to a handful of routes operating from Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate, covering destinations such as Palermo, Catania, Bari, Brindisi, Lamezia Terme, Reggio Calabria, Bologna, Genoa, Turin, Venice and Trieste. Each flight can accommodate only two dogs, and passengers must purchase a €95 base fee plus the additional ticket price for the animal. The rollout follows approval from the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) and is part of a broader effort by Lufthansa, which holds a majority stake in ITA Airways, to meet customer demand for pet‑friendly travel.
