Europe faces critical shortage of bicycle mechanics
Europe is facing a significant shortage of bicycle mechanics as cycling popularity surges across the continent. According to reports from the NextGen Mechanics initiative and Shimano, the sector currently employs approximately 175,000 mechanics but faces an immediate deficit of 45,000 professionals.
To meet future demand and account for workforce attrition, the number of mechanics will need to reach approximately 247,000 within the next six years. This represents a required increase of about 40%. The shortage is driven by the rising complexity of modern bicycles, including electric bikes, cargo bikes, and electronic systems that require specialized technical training.
The impact on consumers is substantial. Shimano’s ‘State of the Nation 2026’ study suggests that 212 million Europeans face maintenance-related obstacles. This has led to 121 million people cycling less frequently, with 7.6 million stopping altogether. Factors contributing to the labor shortage include low wages, lack of professional recognition, and insufficient training programs.
