Europe faces economic challenges from welfare costs and low competitiveness

European nations are facing significant challenges regarding the sustainability of their social welfare systems. According to Eurostat data, France and Austria allocate approximately 31.9 percent and 31.8 percent of their GDP to social benefits, respectively, which is notably higher than the European Union average of 27.3 percent.

This fiscal pressure is compounded by industrial competitiveness issues. Internal Volkswagen data highlights a stark disparity in manufacturing costs: hourly labor costs in Germany's Emden plant are 74 euros, compared to just 12 euros in Tianjin, China. Consequently, the reported production cost per vehicle in Germany is 4,850 euros, while in China it is 1,078 euros.

Economic forecasts from the IMF suggest a widening gap in growth. For 2026, the Eurozone is projected to grow by only 1.1 percent, trailing the United States at 2.3 percent and China at 4.5 percent. While the US focuses on artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure, and China strengthens industrial capacity in electric vehicles and batteries, Europe struggles with high energy costs, aging populations, and complex regulations.
