Europe faces natural gas crisis as storage levels and prices surge
Europe is facing a renewed energy crisis as natural gas prices surge and storage levels hit critical lows. Current gas storage rates are approximately 68%, roughly 17 percentage points below seasonal averages, marking the lowest levels for this period in 15 years.
Geopolitical tensions and logistical disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea have restricted LNG shipments, driving prices up. Benchmark prices have reached levels not seen since late 2022, with the European benchmark hitting 75 euros per megawatt-hour.
An analysis by ESPON suggests the impact of price shocks will be uneven across the continent. Countries with high shares of renewable or nuclear energy, such as France, Germany, and Austria, are expected to be more resilient. Conversely, Eastern European nations including Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, and Hungary face higher inflationary risks.
Looking toward long-term energy security, Wood Mackenzie warns that without significant new investments, the EU could see its gas import dependency rise from 85% to 98% by mid-century. Potential new production in the Eastern Mediterranean, involving Greece and Cyprus, is noted as a possible mitigating factor, with Energean and ExxonMobil planning drilling operations in Greece by 2027.
