Europe faces extreme heatwave as NGOs urge Denmark to deny oil license extensions

Europe is experiencing an extreme heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in parts of Spain. In El Granado, Huelva, temperatures reached 45.7 degrees, while Sevilla-Tafalla recorded 45.1 degrees. France has also seen record-breaking heat, with temperatures hitting 40.8 degrees in Durban-Corbières, marking a new national record for September.

Amidst these climate-related extremes, 15 NGOs in Denmark are urging the government to reject requests from TotalEnergies to extend oil and gas licenses in the North Sea. The NGOs argue that while the government seeks to bolster European energy security, expanding fossil fuel production contradicts the Paris Agreement and exacerbates the climate crisis, which has already contributed to significant heat-related fatalities and economic disruptions across Europe.
