Europe faces extreme heatwaves as NASA tracks 2026 heat dome

Extreme heat conditions are impacting Greece and much of Europe. NASA satellite data and the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) have identified a persistent heat dome that characterized the summer of 2026, featuring five consecutive heatwaves where temperatures systematically exceeded 40°C across Western and Southern Europe.

In Greece, temperatures are expected to reach up to 39°C, with even higher heat forecasted for the upcoming weekend. The heat has contributed to significant forest fires and infrastructure failures in railway networks. NASA's analysis links these extreme conditions to approximately 10,000 excess deaths.

The data highlights a vulnerability in European infrastructure, noting that only 23% of European homes possess active cooling systems, compared to 90% in the United States. This disparity increases the risk of heat exhaustion, particularly during nighttime hours. Urban planners are now utilizing thermal mapping to design more resilient cities through reflective surfaces and increased vegetation.
