Europe faces food crisis as heatwaves and drought devastate crops
Europe is facing a severe food security crisis and economic instability driven by extreme heatwaves and chronic drought. According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, June and July were the warmest months on record in Western Europe, with ongoing risks of heatwaves through September.
Agricultural sectors are reporting devastating losses. In France, groundwater reserves are depleted, and cooperatives like Prince de Bretagne project massive yield drops for vegetables, including up to 100% for artichokes. The French National Egg Promotion Committee noted a daily production loss of one million eggs. In Germany, grain production is expected to fall by 7%, or 3.3 million tons.
Water scarcity is also impacting other critical sectors. In northern Italy, rice fields have been left dried out, while low river levels, such as on the Rhine, are hindering transport and energy production. The economic impact of the drought is estimated to be at least 50 billion euros, with wheat production in the EU and UK projected to drop by 24% this year.
