Europe faces rising tensions amid drone sabotage and NATO patrols
Tensions between the West and Russia have escalated following a series of hybrid incidents in Europe. In Germany, authorities at Leipzig Airport discovered a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator. The device had previously struck a parked Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft, though it failed to explode due to a damaged igniter. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has promised a decisive response to these acts of sabotage.
In response to heightened security concerns and previous drone attacks, NATO has increased its presence on the eastern flank. An AWACS E3 Sentry conducted patrols over northeastern Poland, while the Eastern Sentry initiative continues to strengthen airspace protection. Additionally, Czech JAS-39 Gripen fighters recently intercepted a civilian Cessna that had lost contact with air traffic control in southern Poland, safely escorting it to Krakow.
French intelligence chief Celine Berthon has characterized these Russian activities as a form of non-military warfare, suggesting they could signal the beginning of a broader conflict.
