Europe faces housing crisis and overtourism challenges

European cities are facing a growing tension between the tourism industry and residential stability. In major hubs like Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Lisbon, and Paris, the rise of short-term rentals for tourists is displacing essential workers—including healthcare professionals, teachers, and service staff—to the urban periphery. This shift creates a paradox where housing exists but is increasingly unavailable for long-term residents due to its higher profitability as a tourist asset.

In response to these pressures, Brussels has begun proposing new regulations for European zones experiencing high residential stress.

To mitigate the negative impacts of overtourism, travel experts are encouraging a shift toward lesser-known destinations.
