Europe faces intensifying climate risks from wildfires to financial instability

Europe is facing increasing environmental pressures from extreme weather, including heatwaves, droughts, and spreading wildfires. In southwestern France, significant areas were burned near Bordeaux, while extreme conditions have allowed fires to move further north. The European Union Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) has maintained 24-hour operations to manage these crises, including coordinating firefighting contingents for countries like France and Spain.

Beyond immediate disaster response, these environmental shifts are driving new regulatory focus on financial stability. European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs)—including the European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA)—are increasingly utilizing climate stress testing. Following revised regulations, these bodies are tasked with assessing market exposure to systemic environmental risks and developing methodologies to test institutional resilience against adverse climate developments.
