Europe faces LNG import needs as Russia begins importing fuel
Europe faces a significant challenge in rebuilding gas reserves for the winter. An analysis by energy intelligence firm Montel indicates that more than 140 LNG cargoes per month are required to raise European gas storage levels to an 80% fill rate by early November. This necessity follows months of low injections and declining imports. Competition from Asian markets, which are offering higher prices, may require gas prices to exceed 60 euro/MWh to attract sufficient supply.
In a separate development, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak reported that Russia has begun importing fuel. This marks a shift for the country, which typically exports more fuel than it imports. The move follows ongoing Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, which have created the threat of domestic fuel shortages.
