Europe faces major labor shortage with 10 million vacancies

The European labor market is facing a significant shortage of skilled workers, with over 10 million job vacancies reported according to Eurostat and EURES data. While the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and technology continues, the demand is shifting heavily toward practical and technical roles rather than just IT specialists.

Technical workers are the most sought-after group, with approximately 732,000 vacancies. Other high-demand roles include administrative assistants (630,000), metal and mechanical industry workers (597,000), machine and plant operators (over 522,000), and drivers or vehicle operators (519,000). These five categories alone account for nearly three million open positions.

Despite the growth of the IT sector, which has roughly 375,000 open positions, the European economy shows a critical need for manual and maintenance expertise. Automation has not eliminated the need for human labor, as machinery requires installation, programming, and ongoing maintenance. This shortage is particularly visible in countries such as Germany, affecting industries like manufacturing and transport.
