Europe faces over 1 million end‑of‑life EV batteries by 2030

More than one million electric‑vehicle (EV) batteries are projected to reach the end of their useful life by 2030, creating one of the fastest‑growing waste streams worldwide. Global EV sales have surged past 20 million units, now accounting for roughly 25 % of all new cars sold.

In Europe alone, over 1.24 million fully electric cars were sold in the first half of 2026, a 33.7 % increase compared with the same period a year earlier. The production of EV batteries consumes large amounts of electricity, giving electric cars a higher initial "carbon debt" than gasoline or diesel vehicles. The extraction of critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel has been linked to human‑rights abuses, according to Amnesty International’s 2023 report.

A 2020 Transport & Environment study found that even on carbon‑intensive grids like Poland’s, EVs emit about 30 % less CO₂ than conventional cars. In the most favorable scenario—where both the vehicle’s electricity and the battery’s manufacturing energy are sourced from clean power—EVs are roughly five times cleaner, recoup their carbon debt in just over a year, and save more than 27 tonnes of CO₂ over their lifetime. The ongoing war involving Iran, which has driven up oil and gas prices, has further accelerated EV demand.
